Corporate Volunteering Opportunities
How can you help?
Here at SJOG we offer a programme of corporate volunteering opportunities. We have a range of fun and innovative opportunities that enable our corporate volunteers to develop their skills and make a real difference to SJOG so we can be of more benefit to more people. We’ve outlined some of our core opportunities in this booklet.
Professional Skills
We are always interested to hear from teams who can bring their particular skills to SJOG. Whether it be holding a CV and interview skills class for a group of people who are looking to move on from our homeless services, or helping our staff teams in services and head office be better at what they do - if you have a skill to share, we want to hear from you.
You and your teams can support us by:
- Delivering development workshops, for example on IT, marketing, communications, or management.
- Project management training for our managers.
- Providing employment development support on CV writing, job applications and interviews for people who use our services.
- Being a mentor and support for people who are transitioning from education to work.
Locations: North East, Yorkshire, South, and London
Date: Flexible
Time commitment: Ranging from one day to a longer-term commitment
Number of people: We can provide opportunities for individuals and teams
Changing Spaces
Are you able to lend a hand improving our homes or the community centers we have? We always have opportunities for teams to provide a makeover at the homes we have, or at our projects and community centers. This provides a valuable opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of the people we support through improving our environments.
You and your teams can support us by:
- Offering help painting, gardening, or building new furniture for residential care homes.
- We always need a helping hand at Digswell Community and Gardening Project in Hertfordshire.
- Helping with the planning and co-ordination of larger projects that help with the maintenance of our buildings.
Locations: North East, Yorkshire, South, and London
Date: Flexible
Time commitment: Ranging from one day to a longer-term commitment
Number of people: We can provide opportunities for individuals and teams
Fundraising
We need teams of volunteers to help us raise funds to deliver the important work that we do.
You could volunteer a few hours to take part in an event raising money for SJOG. You could also help to organise workplace fundraising events, such as bake sales, lunchtime quizzes, raffles and other fun activities.
We are always writing to funders and you could even help us writing or reviewing these funding applications.
Whatever you decide to do, we will be able to provide you with materials about SJOG so you can shout about the important work we do.
Locations: Any
Date: Ongoing
Time commitment: 1-2 Days
Number of people: That is up to you.
Marketing
SJOG is a great charity and we need to talk about the work that we do and the impact that we make. Marketing for different audiences is important as we need to talk to people who use our services, families, funders, local authorities and policy makers.
If you have skills in marketing, you and your teams can help us in the following ways:
- Social media marketing.
- Creating compelling case studies that demonstrate the impact of the work we do.
- Producing marketing copy for a variety of purposes.
- Writing for an audience by supporting tender writing.
Locations: North East, Yorkshire, South, and London
Date: Flexible
Time commitment: Ranging from one day to a longer-term commitment
Number of people: We can provide opportunities for individuals and teams
Events
We run events from time to time at our services. These range from summer fayres at our community centres through to festive treats at our registered homes. All events take planning and co-ordination. If you can put together a team who take this under their wing and help on the day, we will have an event in the diary to pair you up with.
You and your teams can help us in the following ways:
- Coordinating the planning of the event.
- Being on hand to help at the event and provide our staff with support.
- Find partners to make the event the best it can be.
- Support the people we support to access events that they might want to go on.

Time commitment: Ranging from one day to a longer-term commitment

Research
Research is important to us. We look to see what the best practice is in our sector, so we can learn and provide innovative services. We also need to analyse the outcomes people achieve when we support them. This all helps build a picture of what we are doing now and where we should go in the future.
You and your teams can support our research by:
- Undertaking research of current trends in the sector. For example we might ask you to find out what support is on offer for people living in a certain area .
- Providing guidance on analysis methods and tools.
- Helping number crunch outcome data.

Our ‘live’ volunteering opportunities
Here is a list of the volunteering opportunities we have now. If these don’t suit you there will be an area where you can help us, so get in touch.
Landscaping and family trail building at Digswell
We have the start of a fairy trail and dinosaur trail at Digswell Community and Gardening Project. You can help this finish this ready for the summer and families to enjoy.
Changing spaces at Woodhall Community Centre
Our community centre in Welwyn Garden City is in need of some TLC. You can help freshen up the spaces that the community use and tie this into our new branding.
Social media
We want to shout about what we do and spread the word. If you have experience in marketing you could help us put together a social media marketing strategy and delivery plan.
Project management
We are undergoing a period of change at SJOG. Providing project management training to our staff would be a great benefit for us while we have exciting and innovative projects about to start.
IT support
We are always looking for ideas about how we do things differently and improve what we do. If you have skills in IT then we you can help us with.
- MS SharePoint - you can help put together a training pack and help support our use of the new system.
- Data visualisation - particularly using MS PowerBI.
