Suicide Prevention for People with Autism
Here to Help is a new service raising awareness of the risk of suicide for people with autism.
By engaging with people with lived experience, the project has been co-designed to produce a range of accessible resources through an interactive website. Supporting people, families and professionals across the Tees Valley area, we are Here to Help.

A roadshow tour across Tees Valley communities to inform and educate on autism, mental health and suicide risks. The project links with social media events through SJOG mobile sensory unit. Our aim is to raise awareness, inspire action and actively develop a platform for people with autism to be heard.
SJOG have such a good understanding of autism. They helped me with my mental health and I no longer need professional intervention.
What Here to Help aims to do:
Prevent
People with autism often face unique challenges, such as difficulty in understanding and expressing emotions, social isolation, and sensory sensitivities. Here to Help is to prevent suicides within the autistic population. By raising awareness about these challenges, we hope to reduce the risk of suicide.
Support
The development of stronger networks for individuals with autism. Here to Help will support the Tees Valley community to become more informed and skilled about autism and suicide so they can provide emotional support and create environments that promote positive mental health.
Educate
Here to Help campaign educates both individuals with autism and people in their support networks, including family, friends, educators, and healthcare professionals. It increases understanding about the signs of emotional distress and suicide risk within the autism community, enabling early intervention and support.
De-stigmatise
Many individuals with autism experience stigma and discrimination, which can exacerbate feelings of isolation and despair. The campaign aims to break down these stigmas.
Empower
Providing information and tools for self-advocacy, the campaign empowers people with autism to seek help, communicate their emotions and build resilience.
Training and
drop-in sessions
Twice-weekly workshops providing guidance on using the suicide prevention toolkits, access to information and signposting for advice. Drop-in sessions providing a safe space for people with autism to talk.
